Hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy for children and young people?

Hypnosis is a state of relaxation, it can be very deep much like the state you experience just before you fall asleep at night time or lighter. One of the reasons that hypnotherapy for children can be such a good choice is that children make good use of their imaginations.

Hypnotherapy for children is safe for them because it is a relaxed state that they already utilise when learning, watching television or doing something creative.

Hypnotherapy treatment might include using stories, adventures, meeting a hero or even character from a favourite TV programme who advises you what to do, and these are all ideas that are easily accepted by children and young people. Some children and young people will be able to experience a deep, eyes closed relaxing trance. Others will be more suited to an awakened trance in which the use of metaphors or stories with hidden suggestions for change and improvement that their unconscious will understand, whilst their conscious mind is entertained by the story.

When using hypnotherapy for children it is often not necessary to explain in detail to children about “hypnosis”. It may simply be explained that they will be having a relaxed and quiet time in which they use their imaginations to resolve their problems. It is important that the child or young person is aware of their issue and would like to change the problem behaviour or issue themselves.

Whilst treating a particular childhood problem, hypnotherapy also gives the opportunity introduce positive affirmations to the child. For example, being more relaxed, having more energy, feeling confident, feeling happy or feelings of liking themselves better. Children are very suggestible and respond well to this type of therapy.

We often forget that children have a lot to deal with. Growing up brings different challenges at different times about relationship and friendship changes, hormonal fluctuations, pressure in terms of schoolwork and at times, having to cope with parental conflict.

We often recognise stress in ourselves, but children and young people often demonstrate it in different ways, including physical symptoms which seemingly have no cause, behavioural difficulties, and self-harming behaviour. Hypnotherapy is a good way of addressing these challenges.
